Explainer Video vs Demo Video: When to Use Each

"Should we make an explainer video or a demo video?" It's one of the most common questions we get.
The Core Difference
An explainer video answers the question: "What does this product do and why should I care?" It's conceptual, story-driven, and focused on the problem and outcome.
A demo video answers the question: "How does this product actually work?" It's tactical, feature-focused, and shows the real UI in action.
Explainer Videos: Top-of-Funnel
Explainer videos live at the top of your funnel. Their job is to capture attention, build understanding, and drive the first action.
They belong on your homepage, paid social ads, Product Hunt, and investor decks.
Demo Videos: Mid-Funnel Closer
Demo videos live in the middle of your funnel. Their job is to take someone who already understands what you do and convince them that your specific product is the right choice.
They belong on your pricing page, feature landing pages, sales emails, and onboarding.
The Decision Framework
If you can only afford one right now, choose an explainer video if your homepage conversion is low or if people don't understand what you do. Choose a demo video if your trial-to-paid conversion needs improvement.
